Emergency guide

First steps after a crash.

1 · The journey checklist

the 60-second vehicle check

  • brakes feel — firm, not spongy
  • tyre pressure + tread, both wheels/all four
  • mirrors angled, nothing dangling
  • lights, indicators, brake light (ask a friend)
  • chain/belt tension, no squeak
  • horn works — politely

before any trip

  • route + weather known; rain plan = half speed
  • phone charged, in a holder, not a hand
  • rest stop every 2 hours on upcountry
  • helmet/belt plan for every seat
  • someone knows your ETA
  • triangles + jacket on board

laminate it. glue it under the fuel cap lid. works every time.

2 · Driver guide, the short lessons

  • 3s
Following distance. Three seconds on tarmac, six in rain. Pick a sign, count when they pass it.
  • 30
People zones. Markets, stages, school gates. Children don't judge speed like adults.
  • 0.00
Sobriety. Legal limit 0.08; sensible limit zero. Fatigue counts as drink — 17h awake ≈ 0.05.
  • dusk
Night craft. Lights on before you "need" them, dip for oncoming, scan for reflector-less cyclists.
  • belt
Every seat. The back seat is not a safety zone. Announce it loudly in matatus.

3 · Campaign kit

poster lines (steal them)

  • "Your people are waiting for you."
  • "Helmet on — even for five minutes."
  • "30 in town. Life goes on."
  • "Rain is falling. The potholes are swimming."
  • "The load is money. The helmet is life."

activations that work

  • Stage pledge day — chair's blessing, free helmet checks.
  • Reflective night walk — strips fitted on the spot.
  • School traffic park — kids teach parents, reverse osmosis.

4 · Community toolkit

  1. Find five people who got tired of the same thing.
  2. Meet the stage chair / head teacher / fleet boss — blessing first.
  3. Run one free drill a month (we send trainers for the first three).
  4. Pin every blackspot you meet on the live map.
  5. Enter the leaderboard — prizes keep volunteers warm.

5 · Mobile safety

  • SMS ALIVE to 8555 — weekly tip + pledge confirmation, any phone.
  • USSD *855# — hotlines and nearest drill, no data needed.
  • WhatsApp tip channel — ask at any drill to join.
  • The full app (SOS, blackspot alerts, points) is in testing — join the waitlist.

6 · Quick law + numbers

⬤ quick law · Uganda

The rules that carry you home.

  • belts mandatory — front and rear seats
  • child under 12 not on a motorcycle pillion
  • no phone in hand while driving
  • 50 urban / 80 rural / 100 expressway unless signed
  • reflective jacket & triangles in the vehicle
  • valid permit, insurance & inspection — always carried
  • give way at zebra crossings, always
  • certified helmet for rider + pillion

7 · FAQ

Yes — riders must provide a certified helmet for every passenger. Fines apply, but the real penalty is preventable head injury.

0.08% BAC for ordinary drivers (lower for commercial). Our advice: zero — Ugandan roads demand full attention.

Please do — that's the whole point. Print, laminate, share. If you can't afford printing, tell us at a drill and we'll bring copies.
